Columbia Firefighters Association is a non-profit organization and a chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighter’s, Local 793. The Columbia Firefighters Association has advocated for the safety of our fellow firefighters and the citizens we serve for over 75 years. Consisting of approximately 200 active firefighters and dozens of retirees throughout the City of Columbia and Richland County we work with the community and city/county officials aiming to help provide the highest standard of service to the community we are sworn to protect.

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, FEO JC Crum. Crum was a full-time firefighter for Forest City Fire Rescue in North Carolina before he came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2015. Crum was first assigned to Engine 2 (Olympia). After a year Crum was asked to come to Engine 9 (Devine St.) where he remains stationed today. Crum helps teach as an adjunct instructor for Columbia’s own recruit academy and also assists with teaching engine company operations classes throughout the state. Crum’s most memorable moment as a firefighter is when he and FF Ryan Sondervan rescued a woman and pulled her out of a fire on Kennedy St. Crum is a certified SCUBA diver. Outside of fighting fires, Crum, his wife, and their 3 kids live on a farm and enjoy agriculture, westerns, and aviation.
In a commendation received for Crum they stated, “Engineer Crum has always been extremely helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to this job. The only thing that surpasses his skill and knowledge is his passion for being a firefighter. Engineer Crum takes it upon himself to go to external trainings and not only soak up all that he can, he comes back and shares it with his peers. He does this because he cares about those around him but also because he wants to better our department and our profession. Engineer Crum always has a smile on his face when you see him and is always open to any questions one may have about the job or something they are trying to accomplish. Crum is a selfless leader who never looks to take credit for anything, but instead insists that the team get the win. Engineer Crum represents the best in our department every day.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, Battalion Chief Matthew Huffstetler. Huffstetler came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2007. His father had retired from the Columbia Fire as a Battalion 4 Chief with 25 years of services and retired in 2006. Growing up Huffstetler worked for his family’s business moving and installing manufactured homes and 5 years ago he had branched out and began his own business. Huffstetler was first stationed on Engine 6 on Broad River Rd. He did a short stint as an engineer on Ladder 8, but returned to Engine 6 as a captain. Chief Huffstetler says he’s been successful because of the crews he worked with. He said, “Your crew members will make or break you. You are only as good as the men and women you have behind you. I pride myself in those people who’ve worked under me and are now in leadership roles. I would say this is the thing that gives me the greatest feeling of accomplishment in the fire service. The fire service is not about the “I” mentality it’s a “we”. If it ever becomes just about you, you’ve forgot where you came from. Leaders lead from the front.” Away from fighting fire Huffstetler enjoys deer hunting, weight lifting, and watching Gamecock football.
In a commendation received for Huffstetler they stated, “Chief Huffstetler constantly works to not only better the men and women under his command, but also those around him regardless of whether or not they are on his shift. His guidance and mentorship has been felt by numerous members of our department and he continually works to improve morale with everyone he comes into contact with. Chief Huff represents what all of us should strive to be.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, FEO Javier Colon. Colon has been in the fire service since 2009 and came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2017. Out of recruit school Colon earned the Maltese Award: given to the top performing firefighter of their recruit class. Colon began his career stationed on Engine 13 (North Main St.), but he also floated to Ladder 7 (Main St.) often. Colon says that his time spent between the two companies and learning from some of the best in the business really inspired him to be “all in”. Early 2019 Colon was more permanently assigned to Ladder 7 and he began to take all the truck/support classes that he could. Now Colon is certified as a swift water technician, in trench rescue, in confined space, rope rescue, and FEMA structural collapse. As an engineer he is currently assigned to drive Rescue 1. In his days off Colon is an adjunct instructor with Columbia’s own recruit school and feels a huge sense of pride and responsibility in teaching the future of the Columbia Fire Department. CFD holds a huge role in his family’s life, as his wife Desireé is also a firefighter on the floor and she is currently stationed on Engine 13. Their two sons Enzo (5) and Giovanni (2) absolutely love visiting all the firetrucks throughout the department. Prior to coming to Columbia Colon was an ASE certified mechanic and managed a few different automotive service facilities.
In a commendation received for Colon they stated, “He has always had a thirst for knowledge when it comes to the job. The department needs more leaders like him”
